Half-year recap: Goals, Money & Sanity

Hi, I'm Deidre. In my posts, I talk about my voyage down the road of self-employment as a website copywriter, my achievements and roadblocks along the way, and what I’m learning as I go (with Marketing Mentor as my guide).

I’m wearing flip-flops and eating berries—it’s summer! And that means 2011 is nearly half over. I laid out my simple, visible, starburst marketing plan in January, and now it’s time to see how on-track I’ve stayed. Let’s take a look:

Hit the magic number: I significantly increased my money goals for 2011, and I’ve almost done it. I’m around $2000 short of where I really wanted to be, but I’ve still made major progress since last year. In the next 6 months, I’m going to work to surpass it!

Build 5 new relationships in 2011: I’ve achieved this already! Through my newsletter, marketing efforts, outreach and word-of-mouth, I’ve already met and worked with 6 new designers who needed a copywriting partner. I’m so happy and grateful for the new relationships with these talented people.

Meet 2+ prospects per week: I’m averaging one per week. Moving forward, I’ll try harder.

Track my time: Much better, but still not perfect. Why are good habits so much harder to pick up than bad ones?

Send un-newsletter every month: I missed one month, but 5 out of 6 isn’t bad. In 2010, I only managed 6 in total! If you’d like to see my 2011 newsletters, here they are:

Another important trail marker is sanity. Since my nutty breakdown in February, I’ve been a lot calmer. I’ve been better at putting things into perspective, not beating myself up so much, and taking the pressure off a little. Ultimately, I’m having a much better year than last year, and I’m not a lunatic. Win-win.

Where do you stand with your goals, money and sanity as 2nd quarter comes to a close? What did you learn?

What are you doing to do more/less of going forward?

  1. So I am a small creative business owner – 7 employees. One of the things that drives me, admittedly, bonkers is when someone says they’ll try harder. I get that that is a great intent — but it is easy enough to say when something doesnt go as well as you had hoped.
So I ask you (and of course we have no relationship other than I read this blog :) )– what are you going to do (not try, but do) differently to meet 2+ prospects per week?
Again, I ask in great intention since I’ve enjoyed watching your process and growth from afar.
    Best,

  2. Hi Kate,
Thanks for the comment. Good point. “Trying harder” won’t get anything done without a plan of action. I’m going to reach out to more people and introduce myself, via phone and email, and keep myself accountable by tracking my efforts. I want my outreach to be genuine, and I’ve taken a bit of a relaxed approach which hasn’t quite helped me meet that goal. Instead of being relaxed about it, I’m going to put it on my Marketing Monday checklist… I can still be genuine in higher volume. Thanks for reading, and for the extra dose of accountability.
